‘My paintings thematise my questions about the diverse view surfaces of a picture body as well as the materials of painting and their possible uses. Specifically, I am concerned with the questions of what a picture is composed of and under which formal conditions its basic components can be presented in a characteristic way and yet be understood as a constitutive whole. Thus, I do not only refer to the frontal surface of a picture, but also to its sides, edges and the back, which is -apparently- hidden from the viewer. In addition to classical painting materials, dust and paint particles from my working environment sometimes play a role in my paintings. They are a direct reference to my studio as the place where the painting is made and the processes leading to the painting are developed. In addition, there are deliberately placed interventions, from areas of colour or in the form of other materials, such as fabric, wood or metal strips, which structure the picture surface compositionally. The interventions I have chosen function as equal dialogue partners in the picture and, for me, pose the question of the pictorial space and the possibilities and interaction of colour and material on a further level.’ — Laura Sachs
